Innovative packaging design helps customers to be more successful Flextrus in Sweden, AR Packaging’s specialised unit for flexible packaging, works closely with customers to develop new packaging solutions and improve existing ones. The design development function tailors material, graphics, shapes, functionality, and look and feel properties to help customer brands connect with consumers. An innovative and sustainable package is a key success factor in an increasingly competitive landscape. The process of developing a new package starts with a review, conducted together with the customer, of the product and how its package will be used. “We cover everything from production, storage and distribution to retail environment and shelf life,” says Anja Sandberg, Packaging Design Developer at Flextrus. After the review, Flextrus helps to improve the package’s functionality, design, and look and feel properties, as well as graphic expression, providing the customer with prototypes and mock-ups. In addition, Flextrus produces test-run samples to select proper material and machine equipment. The development of a package requires close collaboration with the customer. The design development function can visualise new packaging concepts using 3D models and photorealistic computer renderings, allowing the customer to take legitimate design decisions regarding both shape and print. “It helps the customer to save both time and money in the design process,” adds Anja Sandberg. For most packaging solutions, sustainable packaging is now the starting point and is becoming an increasingly important competitive function. Many factors have to be considered, such as barrier, volume and weight. “But what you often forget to include are other factors that can minimize food spoilage and facilitate material recycling. For example, reclosability will improve the durability of the product and thereby reduce waste,” concludes Anja Sandberg.
